Writing Goals
I'm trying really hard to keep to achievable writing goals this year. I work full time at a job I mostly love, and I have a seven month old baby girl who is so deserving of my time and attention. It's difficult to find time for my hobbies, but not impossible. I also paint (or I try to) in my spare time (which I currently seem to have nearly none of), and I have other interests: music, crochet/knitting, beekeeping, cooking, gardening, hiking, and hanging with friends.
I've made my writing a priority because it fits well with my current lifestyle. Painting is messy, and it's sometimes unsafe to have around small children and babies. (I paint with hot wax and oils, neither of which is conducive to tiny child-rearing, particularly when I have to use a blowtorch to keep the wax hot.) I can still have my music, and beekeeping doesn't take up too much time, and I plan to have baby out with me when I garden (and hopefully that works), and I still do some cooking, hiking, and hanging with friends. But as for truly creative work, I can really only write after baby girl goes to sleep, or during lunch at work. I only need my laptop, whereas with painting there is decidedly more prep and cleanup.
So, in thinking about what I truly have time for, here goes:
1. I will write 1,000 words per weekday in my Mystrade in Space AU. I plan to be finished with the first draft by May, and I will use the summer to edit. Perhaps find a beta or two in August, and begin posting in September.
2. I will work on one short story every two months.
Of course, I have other works on the back burner, but I will keep those at a low simmer, and work on them on weekends, and only if I have the time.
Good luck to me.
And good luck to all of you and your goals and desires! Happy New Year.
